IntroducingThe Grand Seiko SBGY043 'Iwao Blue'

An homage to indigo-dyeing tradition in a clean, dressy format.

What We Know

Today, Grand Seiko announces the new SBGY043, featuring a new dial variation that combines the brand's very popular "Iwao" dial pattern with a deep indigo colorway, in a clean layout. We've seen this pattern in other models like the SBGE295 'Hotaka Peaks' and the fan-favorite SBGA413 'Shunbun,' but this time in a blue colorway serving as a tribute to Japan's notable tradition of katsuiro, or indigo-dyeing. The darker color gives the rock-inspired intersecting textures a more subtle look and elevates the contrast between the base dial and the polished, faceted handset and applied indices.

Caliber 9R31, as seen in the 'Omiwatari' SBGY007

It's set in Grand Seiko's thin, elegant take on a dressy cushion case, probably best known for its light blue or white Omiwatari dials. But with this dark indigo livery, the SBGY043 feels a bit more serious, hiding the texture's intensity until you look up close or put the watch in bright light. The case looks broad, though the measurements are compact—38.5mm in diameter, 10.2mm thick, and a lug-to-lug of 43.7mm. Seen through the exhibition caseback is the Spring Drive caliber 9R31, a manual-winding caliber with 72 hours of power reserve and a rated accuracy of +/1 second per day.

Paired with a dressy nine-link bracelet, the new Grand Seiko SBGY043 is priced at $9,800.

What We Think

This is a nice, simple dial addition to the Elegance collection that offers something a little more dramatic in execution than the two light-colored, steel-cased Omiwatari models available in the current catalog. I will admit, there is nothing particularly novel about this dial, as this katsuiro indigo color is paired with this texture on the SBGA469 introduced a few years back.

But this SBGY043 offers that dial uninterrupted by a power reserve indicator (seen here on the back, integrated into the movement bridge) and no date window, so that definitely counts for something. I've long been a fan of this case shape, along with the slim 9R31 caliber, and adding another core, non-limited edition to the line is a decision I can't complain about.
